INTRODUCTION

Set during the end of a nineteenth century on a fictional Earth, D.Gray-man mostly centers around 15-year-old Allen Walker, who is gifted with the ability to control a weaponized form of a divine substance from ages past, called Innocence, and becomes an Exorcist of the Black Order.

This secretive organization aims to stop the plan set in motion by the Millennium Earl to destroy all life on Earth, thus 'cleansing' it. But the Earl has raised an army of Akuma, created by taking advantage of grief over a loved one's death, and summoned the direct descendants of Noah himself, the 13-strong Noah family, to aid him in his second attempt.

Because of the Akuma's ability to wear a human's skin, they are nearly undetectable by any human. Allen proves to be a powerful asset as his 'cursed' left eye is able to detect the Akuma. But soon, this battle nearly turns into a race to collect the 109 Innocence fragments, scattered since the Great Flood of Noah, as the search to find the most powerful Innocence, the 'Great Heart', ensues.

The Black Order, an "army" of the Vatican and the Pope, extends into every continent, having a branch Headquarters in each and the main Headquarters in Europe. Although every part of the organization is needed to defeat the Millennium Earl, the entire Order is divided into active services and support services. The active services consist of the Generals and Exorcists, who control the divine substance Innocence. Their job includes defeating the Akuma and searching for Innocence. It is said that a secret group exists in the active services.

The support services are divided into several sections, including a science, intelligence, medical, signal, security, diplomatic, and logistics section. The science section is responsible for researching the Innocence and developing them into weapons as well as designing Order uniforms. The intelligence section is made up of Finders, those who gather information. The health and welfare of the Black Order staff is overseen by the medical section while the signal section is in charge of the communication that passes between the Order, Finders, and Exorcists. The security section guards all entry and exit points. The diplomatic section manages affairs with other countries and arranges for support and cooperation.

The day-to-day operation of the organization, such as meals, cleaning, and accounting, are taken care of by the logistics section. Although every section is individually managed by a section chief, each branch by a branch chief, the entire organization is directed by chief officer, who is currently Komui Lee. Even the Exorcists receive daily orders from the chief, even though they are normally under one of the Generals. However, the Generals don't take orders from the chief. But they will take orders from the Grand Generals, who are even higher than the chief.

The Grand Generals are rumored to have links to the Vatican. Often, the Vatican sends agents to observe the Order. Although the other five branches have not appeared, the main HQ and the Asian branch have been sites of many events throughout the story, from Lulu Bell's assault and the level four's rampage to the reactivation of Allen's Innocence. Because of the attack, the Head quarters moved from the castle that it inhabited for a century to London.

Allen Walker
images?q=tbn:yij0fFWEnxv1yM:
The15-year-old British Exorcist and main protagonist of the series. Allen was abandoned by his biological parents because of the supposed "deformity" of his left arm and later adopted by Mana Walker - who later died. Allen was tricked into turning him into an Akuma, with the hopes that he would be resurrected. While he barely escaped Mana's assault, he was brandished with the cursed ability to "detect" disguised Akuma.

Despite his hardships, he is a protective spirit that wants to help soothe the pain of those in which he is meant to destroy. His self-sacrafice is so strong that he would harm himself or even die in the place of a complete stranger. Even though he was treated harshly by his General (forced to pay his debts and constantly placed in danger) he still maintains an overall polite and well-mannered attitude. At times when it comes to 'gambling' or the mention of Cross, he becomes noticeably sinister to the point where it frightens those around him.

His parasite-type anti-Akuma weapon goes through two different forms from a metallic claw to a proton canon until it reaches its true form - the Crowned Clown. When activated, it acts as a body-armored Innocence, complete with claws and an excorcism sword that resembles the Earl's. Allen's Innocence possesses a certain degree of sentience, as Crowned Crown is able to manipulate his entire body like a marionette when incapacitated. His synchronization rate surpasses the percentage required for General level, and he is said to have the 14th Noah's memories implanted into him.

Yuu Kanda
kanda-yuu-198787.jpg
A cold, stoic and arrogant 18-year-old from Japan, Kanda is the first Excorcist introduced in the series. He will do whatever it takes to win in battle, to the point where he joked about leaving his teammates to die. For this reason, the moment Allen Walker came to the Black Order HQ, the two had a mutual resentment towards eachother due to their polar opposite personas. Kanda has a long list of things that he hates, the most noteable ones being: people with naive personalities, people who break promises, cursed people, people who won't shut up, people who call him Yuu, and "sweet things".

He is a disciple of General Tiedoll - reluctantly so, as he hates the childish way the man treats him. This is due to the fact that he is actually 9 years old. He died and was "reborn" as a second generation Excorcist. Despite his enhanced abilities, he was considered a "failed experiment."

He can recover much faster than ordinary humans due to a mysterious tattoo above his heart and a lotus flower that he keeps in an hourglass. Kanda has died several times, and is able rebirth after approx. 580 seconds. His anti-Akuma weapon, Mugen, takes the form of a katana and is able to unleash several techniques dubbed "illusions".

Akuma take up the majority of the Earl's army and serve as the "foot soldiers". When one is mourning for a lost relative or friend, the Earl appears offering to resurrect them. However, the raised soul becomes the power source for the Earl's weapon and must obey his orders. In contrast, an Akuma "converted" by General Marian Cross can resist orders from the Earl for a limited amount of time. Akuma "wear" the skin of the one who resurrected them (after being forced to murder that person) and use this to blend in, as Exorcists cannot tell Akuma from human with the exception of Allen.

The Akuma share a metal core made of dark matter that resembles a simplified human skeleton. Their blood also contains a blood virus, which rapidly travels through the victim's body, marking it with pentacles. The virus can be spread by blood bullets of a high caliber shot by the level one Akuma. Eventually, the body crumbles into dust and gives off a poisonous gas. The Akuma also evolve into higher levels, gaining strength as they do so, with level four being the highest seen so far. Each level Akuma becomes more humanoid than the level before it. As its evolution continues, the embedded soul deteriorates. An Akuma-producing plant, referred to as an "egg", is required to create Akuma. There is a special significance to the evolution of an Akuma, and when destroyed by a force other than Innocence, the soul is absorbed by dark matter.

The Noah Family, also referred to as the Noah Clan, the Family of Noah, and the Ancient Family, are a family of fictional characters in D.Gray-man written and illustrated by Katsura Hoshino. The Family is made up of thirteen superhumans and are named after the fact they are the direct descendants of Noah. The Family first appears as an unnamed group at the Earl's dinner party towards the beginning of the series. They are formally introduced as a group shortly after and serve as the main antagonists from then on.

Although they can look human, as a Noah they can be identified by a gray skin tone, yellow/gold eyes, and a horizontal line of seven cross-shaped markings referred to as holy marks. They share an inborn drive to kill Exorcists. They are easily more powerful than most Exorcists and level 3 Akuma, the second strongest level of Akuma seen in the series so far. But just like Akuma, they base their powers off dark matter, the opposite of Innocence, and are vulnerable to Innocence just as Innocence is vulnerable to dark matter.

Each member of the Noah Family are direct descendants of Noah and have inherited his genes. "Carved" upon each members' genes is one of the memories of Noah. In order for one to become a Noah, the Noah's memories must awaken causing the line of stigmata, or holy marks, to appear across the forehead. This process seems to induce excruciating pain. Each Noah has a unique ability, but all of their abilities are based off the opposite of Innocence, Dark Matter. The group is supposedly the true apostles chosen by God, in contrast with the ideas of the protagonist Black Order, who claim they follow the devil. There are thirteen members, although an odd fourteenth member exists. In spite of working with Akuma, the Noah are human, albeit with supernatural abilities.

Road Kamelot
road-kamelot.jpg

Road Kamelot represents the "Dreams" of Noah and is the first Noah formally introduced in the series. Despite her early teens appearance, she is referred to as "oldest" Noah or the "First Child". She is also the adopted daughter of Sheryl Kamelot and his wife and niece of Tyki Mikk. As the story progresses, her appearance becomes more feminine. Early on, Road stated she hated humans. However, she has grown an attachment to Exorcist Allen Walker since then. Despite this, her family is still more important to her than Allen's safety. She also retains child-like qualities as she is often seen eating candy and acts like a typical teen overall, procrastinating on homework and skipping classes.

Road's abilities include complete regeneration, telekinesis, and telepathy. But she has displayed the most use of creating levitating candles sharpened to wax stakes to use as weapons and the ability to send an opponent's mind to one of many dimensions of her creation and control.

Tyki Mikk
tyki-mikk.jpg
Tyki Mikk represents the "Pleasure" of Noah. He is the younger brother of Sheryl Kamelot and the uncle of Road Kamelot. The Earl once mentions that Tyki subconsciously suppresses his Noah. However it later consumed him when Tyki awakened, The Earl Said, he expected as much from the Noah with the memories of "Pleasure".

He first appeared as a Portuguese vagabond who enjoys playing poker and traveled with his three friends looking for work. As a Noah, he holds the title of "Lord" and seems well-known in society. He has killed the most Exorcists in the series so far, destroying the Innocence of and almost killing the protagonist Allen Walker on three occasions. Tyki enjoys living the two very different sides of his life, but seems to fear losing his three human friends the most.

Tyki has the ability to "choose" what he wants to touch. This selective interaction with his environment allows him to walk on water or air and harmlessly pass through anything, with the exception of Innocence. He often uses this ability to remove one of an Exorcist's vital organs without damaging any other part of the body. Tyki has also shown the ability to "reject" the atmosphere, creating a vacuum in which only he can breathe. He can also control Tease, a man-eating golem in the shape of a butterfly, a gift from the Earl. All of his abilities are multiplied after he is consumed by the Noah within him after a failed attempt to exorcise it from him is performed by Allen Walker. Tyki takes on the appearance of a demon-knight and gains speed and strength that surpasses any human's as well as hundreds of vines growing out of his back that he can control remotely. His holy marks, which previously disappeared due to the exorcism, are replaced by a single, large Holy Mark visible at the base of his neck. Later, his appearance returns to normal except for a remaining gray skin tone.

Skin Boric
skin-boric.jpg
Representing the "Wrath" of Noah, Skin Boric is a Noah of American descent. He "awoke" as a Noah three years ago. Skin Boric is killed when he battles Kanda on Noah's Ark in Edo. He is large and has a constant gray skin tone and his holy marks are always visible. Before he was a Noah, Skin worked at the dockyards in New Orleans. After experiencing the Wrath of Noah, the most potent of all the Noah's memories and the suffering his ancestors felt at the hands of the Innocence, he decided to never forgive the Exorcists or God.

Skin's abilities are lightning based. When using his powers, his skin peels, revealing a spiked, golden layer. This golem-like body has a high resistance to attacks and amazing strength. Any enemy who manages to land a blow will receive an electric shock due to the fact Skin's body houses a large amount of electricity. Because of this, he can preform attacks such as Lightning, where a very large electrical discharge is shot out of his mouth toward the enemy, and Divine Punishment, when Skin's electrical energy appear as chain that restricts the enemy's movement and transfers electrical discharges into the enemy's body. This occurs after his attacks have been blocked or lands a blow on the enemy and Skin's energy slowly flows into the enemy's body until it is strong enough.

Jasdevi (Jasdero & David)
jasdevi.jpg
Jasdevi is a pair of Noah twins who were originally one. The short-haired David seems to be the more dominant. Jasdero seems more submissive; this twin has a stitched mouth and longer, blond hair. After a battle with Exorcist Krory, the pair disappeared and have yet to reappear. They represent the "Bonds" of Noah.

The Twins have the power of Materialization. They focus this power by forming bullets created by the two thinking simultaneously and then shooting it through an identical pair of guns. The bullets' color denotes their effect. The Blue Bomb freezes anything it hits and the Red Bomb creates a large fireball. The White Bomb destroys anything in its path. The Purple Bomb, or the Deceiving Spectacles, creates a mask-like cover of paint over the eyes of the enemies and causes them to see any illusion that the twins want. The Green Bomb traps an opponent in a slime-filled bubble. Jasdevi's Hate is a technique that does not seem to require a bullet. It materializes a monster that seems to be made of numerous dead human bodies. The monster moves according to Jasdevi's will. Their Materialization skills also allow them to create numerous objects, such as a floating bubble used to trap an opponent, an illusion of the Earl that is derived from a past memory, and, as Jasdevi, an iron maiden used to trap Krory.

By shooting one another, David and Jasdero can merge together and become Jasdevi. They no longer rely on the guns to focus their abilities, instead using bare hands. Jasdevi's long hair also becomes a weapon and gains new strength from the desire to create the "the strongest imagined body."

Lulu Bell
lulu-bell.jpg
Lulu Bell is a blonde Noah representing the "Form" of Noah. As a Noah, her hair is black and she often appears wearing a black suit and blue tie with sunglasses or as a black cat in the anime for spying purposes and retains various cat-like qualities as a human.

Lulu Bell possesses the ability of metamorphosis and is not limited to a solid state. She can take on the qualities of water, where many attacks pass through her, and the appearance of another character, as shown when she impersonated the Branch Head Andrew Nansen. She can also transform her hands into whip-like tentacles which she can use to pierce, strike, or slice.
